Today we got to take Tetyana out of the orphanage!! We took her shopping which I knew would be overwhelming to her. Drew only wanted to buy enough clothes to take her out of the orphanage and then take her shopping to pick out what she likes. It is obvious that Ukrainians have much different tasted in clothes than Americans. So with a lot of hand motions between the taxi driver, the director we finally got it across to them we wanted to take Tetyana shopping. We had called Yana earlier in the day to have her ask the director if we could take Tetyana to the park but since it started snowing again we knew everything would be wet. We really, really wanted to take her shopping!
We had to take along the orphanage lawyer so there were 6 of us in a car that holds 4. We were packed like sardines! We went back to the store where we found shoes yesterday. They seemed to have the biggest variety in one place. The stores are "what you see is what you get". If you want a different size then you are out of luck. So when we got there we were surrounded by 5 sales people trying to "help". I would have done much better if everyone would have let us be and had the lawyer try to interpret using her "book English" as she says. I was overwhelmed.....I can't imagine how Tetyana must have felt. So they were all pulling things out for us and shoving them in our faces and Luke was off picking out hidious tall boots trying to be funny! The lawyer told Luke "neyt" which means "no". It was funny! We picked some things out for Tetyana and put her in a dressing room. There was a curtain but it didn't matter...the whole place was peering in on her to see how she looked. Then there was her mama, snapping away at the camera!
She did pick out one shirt and somehow it got lost in the shuffle. It is not a bad thing, the only reason I was letting her get it was because it was the only thing she picked out. It was a black t-shirt with metallic animal print with a big lion or something on the front. She is NOT going to like Target! So, between the few things we have picked up for her in the past week and what we got today, she is ready to go back to America with us, rhinestones and all!

Hi guys!
Isn't it so much fun shopping for a little girl????
Is your translator Yana Deman? I was just curious if we had the same one!
Congratulations again on finding your little one! It's heartbreaking to hear that alot of families are being turned away - or shown children that are truly unable to be adopted!
Best wishes and have fun!

Yes! We have/had the same facilitator!!
oh i love shopping with kids the first time!!! they can't seem to understand that they get to pick whatever they want AND they get to keep the things afterwards. just you wait til you've been home a short while. Tetyana will be an all American girl in no time. (ohh mama i WANT THAT!!!) enjoy every single minute of it!!! (oh and enjoy all those steps too, you can't do that here. way toooooo hot!)
Your description of shopping sounds so familar to our experience. I found it so hard to efficiently get things because of the "what you see is what we've got" method of inventory.
Glad you got things done. Wait to you get her home to the malls!
